Best Musicians of the 00’s?

We’ve entered a new decade (2010-2019), so it is now time to reflect back on a completely arbitrary 10 year block of time and make a capricious declaration on who made the best music, and had the biggest influence in the aughts.

  • 5. The Strokes: Ushered in current rock & roll as we know it with 2001’s Is This It. At the time, the airwaves were dominated by boy bands, pop stars and shitty “rock” bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit. The Strokes brought garage band music back and ushered in a second-coming of a genre made famous by the punk rockers of the 1970’s and 80’s. Other albums: Room on Fire, 2003 & First Impressions of Earth, 2005. Several band members had less-than-memorable side projects (Julian Casablancas and Albert Hammond, Jr.) They could have ascended higher on this list if they produced a fourth album during the decade. Additional props to Casablancas’ SNL track “Boombox” with Lonely Island (even though it premiered in January, 2010 – it was recorded in 2009, so it counts.)

  • 4. Radiohead: Arguably the biggest band in the world (fuck you, U2) releasing an album for free? Unheard of! Unless, of course, you’re Radiohead.  In 2007, In Rainbows gave the proverbial middle finger to record labels and established musical aristocracy alike when they released the album on their website – allowing the consumer to pick their own price (even if that price was $0.00.) Even though the band gave the album away for free, it still managed to gross them over $10 million dollars. Impressive. It’s just too bad the only other album they released during the decade was 2003’s Hail to the Thief.

  • 3. Broken Social Scene: Fact – Canada (specifically, Montreal) produces A LOT of amazing music. None better than Broken Social Scene, however. These indie-rock Gods from the Great White North produced some of the best music of the decade with three albums: Feel Good Lost, You Forgot it In People & the self-titled Broken Social Scene. Side projects and solo acts aside, the band itself created single after single of incredible music, and rather than recording albums containing two hits and 10 fillers, they packed their albums full of (in my humble opinion) the best indie rock of the decade (and that’s a bold statement when you consider the competition.)

  • 2. Lil Wayne: That’s right. I had to add a rapper. And Weezy deserves this ranking. Not only is he (again, in my humble opinion) the best rapper of the decade, he was nearly the best musician. His relentless recording, producing and distribution of hit after hit, coupled with his incredible lyrical talent gives him extremely high marks in my book. The fact that he seems to release 2-to-3 awesome FREE mix tapes to every 1 album he puts on shelves also gives him that Radiohead-esque Robin Hood appeal. Love him or hate him, The Carter I, II & III and his countless dozens of mix tapes, compilations and lyrical cameos propel Wayne to heights not seen since Eminem shattered the tenants of Hip Hop at the beginning of the decade.

  • 1. The White Stripes: It’d be criminal to anoint anyone else to this prestigious position atop my rankings. FIVE albums, each better than the last in the 2000’s positions Jack and Meg atop the music world. Not only are the White Stripes the most talented artists of the decade, but they will inevitably someday be two of the most influential musicians of the century. The White Stripes reinvented rock and roll and gave their rabid fan base an unimaginable number of brilliant rhythms, experimental sounds and instruments along with Mr. White’s transcendental vocals. There is no sound as unique as theirs, there is no replacement for them, and no one released more music, with more quality during the 2000’s than the White Stripes. I would like to personally thank them for blessing us (the fans) with: De Stijl, 2000; White Blood Cells, 2001; Elephant, 2003; Get Behind Me Satan, 2005 and 2007’s Icky Thump. And oh yeah, The Raconteurs aren’t half-bad either.

You Have Got to be Fucking Kidding Me! (Tax Cuts for the Rich vs. Unemployment)

This chart sums it all up quite nicely:

First of all – I want to preface this essay with a simple statement: I am not a partisan hack. I am not a “bleeding heart liberal”, hell I’m not even a registered Democrat. In fact, I hate BOTH parties and absolutely LOATHE the two-party system in America. If I had it my way, Ron Paul would be my President and the United States would stand for: Less Government, More Freedom, Fewer Taxes. I am a registered Independent (I) and swear no allegiance to either party. I suppose you could call me a “centrist”, or as Rush Limbaugh calls us, “The Silent Majority.” (ps – FUCK Rush Limbaugh. It’s too bad he didn’t overdose during his oxycontin-fueled whore binges earlier this decade. Blowhard.)

Anyway, the reason I say “wow” is because all I seem to be reading in the paper and hearing on the news is what a fuck-up Obama is and how FAIL the Democrats are. And to to that I say – REALLY!?

The Republicans (most recently under George “Dubya” Bush) had absolutely NO problem whatsoever racking up the national debt to incomprehensible levels to pay for two things: I) Defense. Namely, the Illegal War in Iraq (side note: Yes, Sadaam Hussein was a genocidal despot that deserved to die. No, Iraq did not have WMD’s [the ENTIRE, you know, premise for invading their country.] I think the problem could have been s0lved by creating a Sunni resistance movement funded by the CIA to kill Sadaam, and then install a puppet government to run the show. Just my opinion.) The Legal War in Afghanistan (I hold no opposition to the ouster of the Taliban.) And II.)  Finally, tax cuts for the – wait for it… WEALTHY!

Just how much did these tax cuts for the rich cost our country in tax dollars you ask? $2,480,000,000,000 (yeah, that’s ten [10] zeroes – $2.48 TRILLION dollars!) over a decade (2001-2010.) Mind-boggling.

Now let’s compare that number to how much the recent health care package passed by Congress plus the federal unemployment extension has cost our nation: Health Care Plan – $1,600,000,000,000 ($1.6 Trillion) plus the Federal Unemployment Extension: $66,000,000,000 ($66 Billion dollars [$0.066 trillion].) That comes out to $1.67 trillion COMBINED (health care + federal unemployment extensions [there have been four since 2008.])

Tax cuts for the rich? $2.48 trillion. Unemployment extension for those with NO income? $0.066 trillion ($66 billion.) Nice.

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? $948,292,875,212 ($948 Billion dollars) and counting (, and that includes $718 billion for Iraq (which, to date, is an Epic FAIL) and $266 billion to Afghanistan. How much was that health care plan again? Ah yes, $1.6 TRILLION (steep indeed.)

What I’m getting at is the inherent hypocrisy that exists in politics. The Democrats cry foul when the Republicans wage costly wars (which is somewhat justifiable in hindsight) and gives tax breaks to those who need it LEAST, and the Republicans flip their proverbial fucking lids when the Dems shell out for unemployed workers in states like California, Michigan and Nevada, where unemployment is hovering above 12.6% (5.0% is considered “good”) and the REAL rate of unemployment (unemployment rate + those who gave up looking for jobs + part time workers searching for full time jobs) is anywhere between 16 and 20% in most states right now.

Plus the whole health care thing… I’m done talking about. I don’t love it. I don’t hate it. Whatever. The Republicans have no room to bitch over spending, that’s all I’m saying. There is no such thing as a “fiscal conservative” anymore (and if there is, they are un-electable misers like Ross Perot or weird Lebanese-American consumer advocates like Ralph Nader.)

I’m just disgusted right now. I hope this opens some eyes. The whole system is a joke.

For those keeping score: It’s $3.5B for the Republicans and $1.67B for the Democrats. HOWEVER, in the defense of the Republicans, they racked up that debt over the course of 8 years. The Dems have only had 18 months or so.

Post Script: An obligatory quote from my favorite Libertarian –  “Jesus hated bald pussy” – Kingdom of Fear, p. 65-7 – “Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine?” – Hunter S. Thompson

The Psychopath (A Quote)

“The psychopath, like the child, cannot delay the pleasures of gratification; and this trait is one of his underlying, universal characteristics. He cannot wait upon erotic gratification which convention demands should be preceded by the chase before the kill: he must rape. He cannot wait on the development of prestige in society: his egotistic ambitions lead him to leap into the headlines with daring performances. Like a red thread of predominance of this mechanism for immediate satisfaction runs through the history of every psychopath. It explains not only his behavior but also the violent nature of his acts.” -Robert Lindner, Rebel Without a Cause

“KNOW YOUR DOPE FIEND. YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT! You will not be able to see his eyes because of Tea-Shades, But his knuckles will be white from inner tension and his pants will be crusted with semen from constantly jacking off when he can’t find a rape victim. He will stagger and babble when questioned. He will not respect your badge. The Dope Fiend fears nothing. He will attack, for no reason, with every weapon at his command-including yours. BEWARE. Any officer apprehending a suspected marijuana addict should use all necessary force immediately. One stitch in time (on him) will usually save nine on you. Good luck.” – Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

25 Days Without a Post!?

Wow.. talk about neglect.

Sorry for the hiatus. I promised new material… I delivered: Nothing.

There are several reasons for this, and rather than write individual rants/diatribes for each one, I’ll simply list them conveniently for y’all:

I. On St. Patrick’s Day, 2010 I was arrested in Fullerton, CA at 10:13pm (not even enough time to get a decent drink in me!) and booked for misdemeanor assault & battery. The DA has yet to file charges.

II. While incarcerated (app. 10pm – 6am) I was beaten over a half-dozen times by two-three different officers. I sustained several broken fingers, bruised ribs and a mild concussion.

III. I had to sell my ’94 BMW 3-series to pay my attorney’s retainer fee to ensure this does not destroy my future (I work in an industry that is heavily regulated and does extensive criminal and financial background checks.)

IV. I exhausted my unemployment benefits after 99 weeks. In that time, I sent out 842 applications/resumes, had 17 job interviews with 11 different companies, and was hired once (by a financial group in Newport Beach, CA.)

V. End result: I worked on a 10-99, commission-only basis (translation: I paid my own expenses and didn’t earn any money) and ended the year with a roughly $6,000 loss.

VI. I am now car-less, jobless, money-less and have sold off almost everything I own at record stores, pawn shops, craigslist, eBay, Buffalo Exchange and yard sales. I have virtually no tangible assets to my name.

VII. My bank accounts were all either frozen or closed due my inability to make minimum monthly credit payments due to the financial hardship I am currently suffering.

VIII. As we speak, I have a net worth of $20.27.

IX. I continue to search for employment in vain.

X. Life’s a bitch, and then you die.

End Note: If any of my readers in Orange County hear of any job opening, then please HOLLER at your boy. Unfortunately, blogging does not pay, and despite the tens of thousands of patrons I attract via the google search terms “lesbians”, “big clit”, “anal sex”, and “Japanese hentai tentacle rape porn” I have not received a donation since 2009 (shout out to the folks that threw down btw! Even $1 counts my friends.)

I’ll try to check back in soon, it’s just tough to create hilarious/offensive/provocative material when you exist in a perpetual state of doom, misery and melancholy cynicism. I know you understand. That’s why I like you.

Edit: Oops. I almost forget the best part! My girlfriend also dumped me due to my …lifestyle (or lack thereof.)

Really Jealous of This Fucking Guy.

The Face of Justice.

Have you read the paper lately? Police officers in the “party towns” of Fullerton, Orange, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach & Costa Mesa (among others) have started an increasingly (and very troubling) trend of arresting, beating, detaining and charging young men and women without cause. They hide behind their badges and create false allegations like “resisting arrest”, “obstructing justice”, “belligerence”, “combativeness” and other fables to justify their sadistic fix for violence.

Not ALL police officers are bad people. In fact, I support 99% of the police officers in Orange County. They are here to PROTECT & SERVE (Not BEAT & ARREST for pleasure.) It’s time to hold these overzealous, and ultra-violent pain-mongers accountable for their brutality. Why does it take 12 police officers to detain ONE person who is NOT resisting arrest, but only ONE police officer responds up (nonchalantly after 45 minutes) when we report a threat, attack, burglary or rape!? It’s NOT right and it needs to change TODAY!

Please click the link below to join us on Facebook! Thank you for your support! Remember: Democracy is the VOICE OF THE PEOPLE; and the moment those in charge begin to abuse their power is the moment democracy fails to function. As citizens, it’s time to FIGHT BACK WITH PEACEFUL ACTION!

Potty Mouth…

Just celebrating the 30,000 hits plateau… more new material to come.

Have patience my friends, I have some good stuff coming up very soon.
