California Outlawing Divorce?

Remember Proposition 8? Well, since it was such an overwhelming success in the “ultra-liberal” State of California, lawmakers have considered a new ballot initiative for 2010 – this time banning divorce.

John Marcotte, a California Republican, is collecting signatures to get the “California Protection of Marriage Act,” which would ban divorce, on the ballot.

Marcotte calls his ballot initiative,”the logical extension of Proposition 8,” the controversial measure which last year added “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California,” to the state’s constitution.

save marriage

Marcotte is serious about protecting the sanctity of marriage — his Web site is subtitled, “Safeguarding marriage from the evils of divorce,” and supporters can purchase a t-shirt of a bride and groom chained together, reading “You said, ‘Til death do us part.’ You’re not dead yet.”

But his point is valid — since many Prop 8 supporters cited defending traditional marriage as their reason for pushing for the gay marriage ban, shouldn’t they also be supportive of the “California Protection of Marriage Act,” which eliminates the greatest threat to marriage that exists?

I’m anxious to see how much momentum this generates. I vividly recall how passionate conservatives and religious zealots were about stripping the gay and lesbian community of California their right to marry (and the legal privileges that come with it.) Isn’t it high comedy that the State with the highest divorce rate per capita created a law outlawing gay marriage on the basis that marriage is a “sacred tradition”, whose “sanctity must be upheld.” Lmao!

ps) My position on gay marriage is: “Let ’em do what they please!” As a civil libertarian, it is my belief that under the Constitution of our Great Nation, minority groups are protected from the tyranny of the majority unless they are guilty of an act that is deemed harmful or dangerous to society. Gay marriage? Neither.

Also, it wasn’t too long ago that interracial marriage was illegal in this country. That worked out well, didn’t it? Ah, American hypocrisy – aint nuthin’ quite like it!
